Stories

Kalle Virkkala, alias Koulun-Kalle, has told a story about the arrival of music at Kaustinen: “And I’ve been thinking that it was already Väinämöinen who brought music to Kaustinen. You see, when Väinämöinen’s singing and music playing crossed all Finland, they met these cliffs here, Pööskallio, Isokallio and Finninkallio. They ran into the cliffs and the notes fell down. Goats, kids then ate that grass and received a note muscle. And when people here ate that meat, they received music. That singing and playing by Väinämöinen made some kind of a whirlpool here at Kaustinen. And then, so many good folk musicians were born at the same time. (…) (Hanhikoski 2007, 7)
