“At exactly four o’clock, a huge red smoke cloud rises from the rear of the John Grafton, and immediately thereafter we hear a loud explosion, like a heavy cannon shot. In the midst of smoke and splashing water, we can see how the mast with its red flag first shakes and then falls down. At the same time, another smoke cloud emerges and is followed by another explosion. The funnel and bridge disappear into the smoke cloud. When the smoke fades away, half of the ship is gone.” (Olin: Aselaiva John Grafton, 1994)
